#24 #29in29 Bridge deconstruction

A few blog posts ago I took some pictures of the scooter and motorcycle in front of the Johnson Street bridge, the bridge is affectionately known as 'Big Blue'.  Time is running out very rapidly for Big Blue as there is going to be a replacement bridge built.  This bridge has served the communities of Victoria and Vic West well.  Right now the city is in the process of deconstructing the rail bridge portion and then will move onto the car deck.  It has been very interesting watching the decommissioning process and a little sad.

Looks like the commute will be very cumbersome for a while. But I am glad that they do a reconstruction. I really like that bridge.

Oh no, I just read it again. DE-costruction. Are they serious? That would be a pity.

Bob - apparently it is going to take 2 years. The morning commute is going to be terrible over the Bay St.

Sonja - it was a beautiful state of the art bridge in its time, but now it is falling apart & ready to break into pieces.

I love the color contrast in your photos - green moss on the roof, red cranes, and the blue of the bridge. very cool.

I agree. Sad to see the old bridge go, but also interesting to follow the process.

You know something Dar - they could have kept a section of it and used it somewhere for a piece of usable art - like for a gazebo of sorts, turned it into a climbing frame or something. Fixed it up and kept it the original blue. Maybe even used it for a footpath somewhere. Oh well poor blue will be no more eventually.

Trobairitz - cloudy days are excellent for photography & contrast. The people who live in the floathome beside he bridge are going to live with a tonne of noise for the next 4 years.

Bluekat - I am actually looking forward to seeing it all unfold, it should be interesting.

Kiwi_Deb - agreed they could cut it up & sold pieces of it. Maybe they will paint he new one blue too.
